The Legacy Fund's mission is to ADVANCE, PROMOTE, IMPROVE and ASSIST the SCIENTIFIC and CLINICAL BENEFITS of GOAL-DIRECTED ORTHODONTIC AND INTERDISCIPLINARY DENTO-FACIAL DIAGNOSIS and TREATMENT through EDUCATION and RESEARCH.
Since the official kickoff of the Legacy Fund in June 2007 at the RWISO meeting in Kyoto, Japan over $300,000 in donations have been received in support of the Fund's research and education initiatives.
With this directive the Legacy Fund continues to support four major initiatives.
TEXTBOOK: Total financial commitment for the editing, publishing and marketing "Goal-Directed Orthodontics" edited by Dr. Andrew Girardot and Kathy Ribbens.
JOURNAL: Financial support for the publication of three of the four issues of the RWISO Journal. The Journal has been very fortunate to have two excellent editors-in-chief, Drs. Tom Chubb and Joe Pelle, who have worked diligently to create a high quality Journal. As part of the mission directive, it was important to have a means of disseminating research, education and case problem solving evidence-based papers and reports as regards goal-directed orthodontic and interdisciplinary dento-facial diagnosis and treatment to the world-wide orthodontic community. Publication of the Journal has been suspended for 2013 and will be reconsidered at a later date by the RWISO Board. The major focus of the Legacy Fund during 2013 is the publication, advertising and sales of the textbook, "Goal-Directed Orthodontics".
RESEARCH GRANTS: Support research projects that concur with the Legacy Fund's mission directive.
Supported Research Projects Under Investigation:
Drs. Edson Illipronti and Solange Mongelli de Fantini, Brazil, received a research grant from RWLF to support their research project entitled "Evaluation of functional morphology in children with unilateral posterior crossbite before and after rapid maxillary expansion"*.
Drs.Carol Weinstein and post-graduate student Sigal Bentolila Weiner, Chile, received a research grant from RWLF to support their research project entitled "Degree of apical root proximity, periodontitis, and root resorption of the upper canine and first bicuspid found in a sample of Roth prescription-treated orthodontic cases using CBCT compared to panoramic radiography".
MARKETING AND DEVELOPMENT: The Legacy Fund's long term marketing plan includes improved communication with quarterly newsletter; advertising and sales campaign for the textbook and mentoring program for membership in order to accelerate the learning curve associated with goal-directed orthodontic and interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment. With quarterly newsletters, publication of the textbook and mentoring program the value of RWISO membership will increase and the interest in supporting the Legacy Fund will grow. In the future RWLF will be considering scholarship programs for doctors interested in learning goal-directed orthodontic and interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment at teaching centers around the world.
